I have been an active member of the Lao Khmu Youth Group, (a distinct ethnic group within Laos, like the Hmong and Lao). It was started by my family to bring Khmu Youth closer to their parents and cultural roots. As well it provides a comfortable forum to discuss and express what it is to be Khmu and also South-East Asian; a minority speaking a foreign language.

I try to face every day as a present that creates my future as an artist and a human being. I volunteer at my old high school. The corridors still have the same smells, colors and faces that remind me of my first months in limbo as an immigrant. Then, many told me that’s I had no future outside the factories.

The Japanese Zen concept that food is at once sustenance and transitory perishable art--pleasing to the senses to be ingested, digested, transformed as life-sustaining energy--remains for me a fascinating media. I view my works and creative processes much the same way; a beautiful, powerful and compelling statement to primary instincts.

My work exchanges aesthetics and concepts from various cultures as a way of enhancing communication; creating a visual language that can cross the boundaries of cultural diversity. I create my own reality, a struggle between truth and a representation of truth. Influenced by conversations and connections between people, I use metaphors and iconography to investigate character types.

In realizing our imperfections, it is important to express, through the arts, what we lack in our society. My photographs of my grandmother express beauty not found in youth or glamour, but in someone old. I am frustrated by the focus on beauty and youth. American society disregards our elders, not realizing they are important assets in our lives.

I intend to return to South Africa with my knowledge of and experience in the animation business and establish a school/working studio. I will service my community and country by providing education to the disadvantaged, while developing an infrastructure capable of competing with the International Animation Industry.

I wish to eventually return to my beloved country to promote "human connections" through my illustrations. South Africa has great human diversity but has been bloodied and bruised. Extreme racial and social barriers still exist. I have a strong commitment to use my art to promote the virtue of tolerance as the most essential requirement for survival for the human race.

The terrible political, economical and social crisis that Colombia faces has influenced me to use art as a social and cultural medium. I am going to use my abilities to display the true beauty of Colombia. Through my art I want to represent and stand up for my Latino heritage and roots, and reconstruct and enhance the damaged perception of my country.

Ten years ago some developers "discovered" this amazing paradise [in Puerto Rico] and decided they could invest in luxurious housing for people in the area. This situation has become a problem and a threat to the forest... [In Puerto Rico] I will try to make people aware of what nature has to offer. Therefore, they can understand a balance where nature and human kind could live in harmony.

I volunteer at an after-school program in Boston. We teach kids to draw how they feel when they get angry or upset instead of picking a fight. With this experience I would like to expand Thai children’s exposure to art by starting a non-profit organization that will provide art and craft activities during weekends and summers.
